Which Size Is Right for You?

Single adults: A standard single (90cm) works for most people, but if your room can accommodate it, a small double (120cm) gives you noticeably more space to stretch out.

Couples: A standard double (135cm) gives each person just 67.5cm of width, which is less than a single bed each. If budget and room size allow, a king (150cm) or super king (180cm) will dramatically improve sleep quality for both partners.

Tall people: Standard UK mattresses are 190cm long. If you are over 6'2" (188cm), look for king or super king sizes which are 200cm long, giving you an extra 10cm of legroom.

Room Size Recommendations

As a rule of thumb, you should be able to walk comfortably around at least two sides of the bed. Here are minimum recommended room sizes:

UK vs US vs EU Sizes

UK and US mattress sizes are not interchangeable. A US Queen (152cm x 203cm) is close to a UK King (150cm x 200cm) but not identical. EU sizes differ again. Always check the exact dimensions when buying online, especially from international sellers.

If you are buying a bed frame and mattress separately, make sure both use UK sizing. Mixing a UK bed frame with a US mattress will leave gaps or create an overhang.

Frequently Asked Questions

The double (135cm x 190cm) is the most commonly purchased mattress size in the UK. However, king size is growing in popularity as bedrooms in new-build homes get slightly larger.

No. A UK King is 150cm x 200cm (5' x 6'6"). A US King is 193cm x 203cm (6'4" x 6'8"), which is actually larger than a UK Super King. A US Queen (152cm x 203cm) is the closest equivalent to a UK King.

Not always. IKEA uses European sizing, which differs slightly. An IKEA double frame is 140cm x 200cm compared to a UK double at 135cm x 190cm. Check dimensions carefully before purchasing.
